If you have visited my blog before, you know how much I love to make wreaths for the different seasons and holidays throughout the year. For the past few years I have decorated my door for the summer with my DIY Patriotic Clothespin Wreath, which I love. This year I decided to try out a new wreath and share the simple tutorial with you.
It's easy to make a patriotic wreath to celebrate the 4th of July with colorful red, white, and blue supplies that I was able to get from Oriental Trading. They have a great selection of paper straws and other crafting items, as well as decor pieces and party supplies. Let's get on with the tutorial so you can learn to make your own cute wreath!
DIY Patriotic Paper Straw Wreath
This red, white, and blue wreath is quite easy to make and within an hour you will have a nice looking wreath to decorate your door.
Supplies Needed For Red, White, and Blue Straw Wreath
Craft Ring - I bought mine at Michael's, but you can find them at other craft stores
Red Paper Straws - 65 straws for an 18" wreath
Blue Paper Straws - 60 straws for an 18" wreath
Star Paper Straws - 26 straws cut in half
Wood StarsMini Glue Gun
Mini Glue Sticks
Paper
Mod Podge
Ribbon
Paint - Red, White, and Blue
NOTE - The wreath I made used an 18" frame, which is great for use in our home with my mantle decor. I think that if you are making a wreath for your door, a 12" frame would work better. If you use a 12" frame, you will need less straws to finish the wreath.
Easy Tutorial to Make Patriotic Paper Straw Wreath
If you are using the same wood biodegradable craft ring that I used, you may want to cover the brown with either white paper or a patriotic print. I chose to use white because I had a whole roll of craft paper already.
2. Carefully use your hot glue gun and glue 5 red straws onto your frame, then 5 blue straws, and continue to alternate around the craft ring. Your straws should not be crowded on the ring - that is so you can have a nice sunburst look of the straws.
3. Cut the star straws in half - about 3.75" each. Two blue star straws will be glued on top of each grouping of red striped straws. Two red star straws will be glued on top of each grouping of blue straws.
4. Cut a short length of ribbon that you will use to hang the wreath. Glue the ribbon together at the cut ends, making a loop at the top. Glue the ribbon to the back of the wreath where you want the top to be.
5. Make groupings of three stars, then paint one each of red, white, and blue. When the paint is dry, glue them overlapping, but spaced out so they are not directly on top of each other.
6. Arrange the stars on your wreath on one side, then glue the stars to your wreath.
That's it! Now your wreath is ready to hang on your door to welcome visitors when they come to your home.
This wreath is perfect for any of the patriotic holidays throughout the year. What a nice burst of color it will add for Flag Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day, and all summer long.
