Last week I shared my book review for the book Paper Goods Crafts. I shared a picture of the project I created based on one that was in the book. I didn't follow their directions though, I made up my own and wanted to share with you how you can replicate this in your own home.
Supplies Needed
Watercolor Paints - I like the cake paints better than the liquid ones in a tube
Paintbrush
Coffee Filters - buy at any grocery store
Scissors
Wilton Lollipop Sticks - mine were the perfect length for my vase at 11 3/4 inch
Washi Tape - green
Ribbon of your color choice
Vase
Mod Podge Silicone Craft Mat
When I started painting the coffee filters, I didn't use my Mod Podge Craft Mat. Unfortunately I then had watercolor paint on my desk. It was easy to clean up, but I learned my lesson. I put down my craft mat and didn't have any more trouble.
I used multiple hues of the same color to paint each coffee filter so the flowers were different shades. I made 2 of each: purple, pink, blue, and turquoise. I painted in a circular pattern, but wasn't exact. Most flowers have different shades and vibrancy and these watercolor flowers are like that as well.Paintbrush

When I started painting the coffee filters, I didn't use my Mod Podge Craft Mat. Unfortunately I then had watercolor paint on my desk. It was easy to clean up, but I learned my lesson. I put down my craft mat and didn't have any more trouble.
It only took them about 5 minutes to dry, then I folded the filters in half until they were a triangle shape. I trimmed the edges in different patterns to remove the small amount of white at the edges of the filters; some in scallops, some with no clear pattern, and some with triangles cut out. This would be fun if you have any of the different shape craft scissors too.
Next I held the middle of the filter in my fingers and twisted, causing a small twist in the back and then I kind of crinkled the filter so it looked like a flower blossom.
Next I made the "stems" for my flowers. I took the washi tape and attached the end to one side of my lollipop stick at an angle, so as I turned the stick the washi tape would end up looking like the red on a candy cane. It was actually quite fun and I let my girls help.
When I got to the end of the lollipop stick, I measured off a little extra of the tape so I could use it to wrap around the twist at the back of the flower to attach to the stick. It's fine if you want to have the flower a little lower down the stick as long as the "stem" doesn't extend higher than your flower.
I tied a ribbon around a few of the flowers and made a simple bouquet.
I decided to put them in a vase in my craft room so I can look at them while I am editing pictures, writing blog posts, planning out my week, or creating. They are a nice little brightener in my room and remind me of the fun I had creating this project.
Here they are sitting on top of my little shelves. They look so pretty with the sun streaming in through the windows onto them.
So there you have it. A simply painting project where you can make your own flower bouquet.
That's so fun, and really cute too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice comment Angie! I'm thinking of making more and stringing them in my daughters room.
DeleteThat is so cute! And I love the colors!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I didn't realize how much I loved those colors until I was looking around my room and noticed how many things there are in those shades.
DeleteHow pretty and fun for the whole family! I can't wait to make this for my own home that is being built. Love it!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new home! It is always exciting to think about the fun new decorations that you can add. Thank you for your nice comments!
DeleteThis is a great project! I have done coffee filter projects with the kids using markers and a spray water bottle, but have not tried watercolors.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried the markers and spray water bottle, so I will add that to my list. =)
